PM Modi vows strict action against crimes against women after Kolkata tragedy

In a bid to respond to recent traumatic cases like the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, PM Narendra Modi assured to take stringent actions against anyone involved in crimes against women and girls, saying that such is “unacceptable” no matter the status of the offenders.

At the “Lakhpati Didi Sammelan” event in Jalgaon of Maharashtra, PM Modi said, “Yes, women’s safety is the government’s chief priority. I once again appeal to all the state governments that the perpetrators of crime against women are the most sinful and should not be let off regardless of who they are.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi came out strongly on the issue in the wake of a tragic incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital that triggered protests and a bitter political clash between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP over the declining state of women’s security in West Bengal.

Guaranteeing the government’s firm stand on the protection of women, stressing the augmentation of laws for subsequent punishment of the guilty, Prime Minister Modi stated, ‘

‘We are increasing intensification of laws to give severe punishment to those involved in crimes against women. ”

The Prime Minister also talked about Women’s Empowerment, which has been one of his government’s long-term policies. The PM stressed that his government has done more for Women in the Last 10 years than all the governments put together after independence. He said that before 2014, less than ₹ 25 thousand crore loans were given to women self-help groups, while in the last decade, ₹ 9 lakh crore has been given.

Defending the BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, PM Modi appealed for people’s vote for years to come, referring to the state as the ‘light’ that would light up a developed India with its future pegged to investment and jobs.

The stand taken and the Prime Minister’s deep-rooted firm commitment come at a time when the nation is still in shock over the Kolkata tragedy, which shows the government’s earnestness to protect the women and ensure their safety across the country.
