PM reviews cooperative sector progress, advocates organic growth

PM Modi also proposed increasing focus on export markets and creating a model of soil testing through cooperatives to enhance agricultural practices. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday presided over a high-level meeting to discuss the progress of the cooperative sector, where he emphasized the widening of the sector, particularly in the area of organic product trade, an official statement added.

PM Modi also proposed targeting export markets and creating a soil-testing model through cooperatives to enhance farm practices, an official said he quoted him as saying. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for integrating UPI with RuPay KCC cards to enable financial transactions and stressed the importance of healthy competition among cooperative organizations,” the statement added.

Modi also underlined the need for registering the assets of cooperative bodies so that it remains transparent and recommended cooperative farming as a greener model of agriculture, the statement added.

While speaking on the education sector, the PM recommended starting cooperative courses in schools, colleges, and IIMs and projecting successful cooperative organisations so that upcoming generations get inspiration from them. He also added that youth graduates must be motivated to contribute and Cooperative organizations must be graded according to their performance, to institute competition and growth at the same time,” the statement added.

Among others, home and cooperation minister Amit Shah, cooperation secretary Ashish Kumar Bhutani and principal secretary to PK Mishra attended the meeting. During the meeting, the PM was briefed about the National Cooperation Policy and key achievements of the cooperation ministry over the past three and a half years. Realising the vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samruddhi’, the ministry has formulated a draft of the National Cooperation Policy 2025 through an extensive consultation process.

The policy’s goal is to ensure the systematic and integrated growth of the cooperative sector, with a view to hastening rural economic growth and giving priority to women and youth. It aims to foster a cooperative-led economic model and develop a strong legal and institutional environment.
