Prakash Ambedkar criticizes Amit Shah’s remarks on B.R. Ambedkar

Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar, on Wednesday strongly assailed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks about the father of the Constitution, terming them as reflective of “same old mentality” of the BJP. Several MPs from the INDIA bloc staged a protest on Parliament premises and demanded an apology from Shah for his remarks which were disrespectful to B.R. Ambedkar.

The Congress party joined in, pressing Shah to make public apologies for what happened to underscore the accountability of this official. Prakash Ambedkar, who heads the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, invoked past conflicts: “Before the BJP was formed, its predecessors, Jan Sangh and RSS, opposed Babasaheb during the adoption of the Constitution.”

Shah’s statement, he claimed, only showed the mindset of the BJP. “There is nothing new in the statement. Their old plans remain unexecuted—not due to Congress, but because of Babasaheb Ambedkar, and they will continue to sulk.”

The above anger gave Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh an opening to share a video clip of Shah’s speech in Rajya Sabha, where the Union home minister had said during discussions on the Bill, “It has become a fashion to say ‘Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar.’ If they had invoked God’s name so many times, they would have gained a place in heaven.” Thisanger the opposition members further.

In a related development, Prakash Ambedkar sought compensation of ₹1 crore to the family of Somnath Suryawanshi, who allegedly died in judicial custody after his arrest in connection with violence in Parbhani city over the desecration of a Constitution replica.
