Pre-Kuleba talks: Modi-Putin emphasize dialogue for Russia-Ukraine peace

The India-Russia Friendship Gains Momentum Despite the Ukraine Ruckus

New Delhi, March 20, 2024: In the wake of the conflict in Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged phone calls to get their viewpoints on the circumstances. The Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi of India, congratulated his counterpart, President Putin, on his re-election.

He affirmed India’s steadfast commitment to negotiations and diplomacy as the conductors of resolving the conflict.

Even though leaders on both sides felt that close cooperation in multilateral platforms such as the SCO and BRICS could be a factor for further consolidation, they also realized that there was room for improvement.

Therefore, the upgrade, which acknowledged a very high level of bilateral relations, compels the parties to cultivate and improve the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries even more.

India has become a neutral force in the Ukraine conflict but has moved to strengthen trade ties with Russia, specifically in the energy sector. However, India might present a platform for the delivery of Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, which further means a medium of communication to end the current war.

The value of advanced partnerships and mutually beneficial arrangements in trade, investment, energy, transport, and economy became clear through this discussion. President Zelensky of Ukraine never came to India since the conflict erupted and cut off his trip to the G20 summit in India held in India. Meanwhile, Putin confirmed at the same G20 summit that he wouldn’t appear at the event held in India. Besides that, the prime minister of India met with the Ukrainian President during the G7 summit held in Hiroshima.

The main aim of the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba’s mission is to seek peace and get the Ukraine crisis solved. The host country for the year is Russia. Notwithstanding, India should enhance its participation in finding a lasting solution to the conflict.

President Putin’s reelection is just another drop in the Kremlin’s bottomless power pool. During his presidency, the keys to his actions were international distant military operations rather than domestic politics.

India and Russia’s deepening of partnership through the Ukrainian feud explains what this reflects: the shared goal of maintaining status-quo and strengthening the dialogue channel in the global arena.
