Protests erupt after Kolkata doctor’s murder, family speaks out

Amidst a growing national outcry, the father of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, who was viciously raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, shared a poignant detail from his daughter’s life.

She kept a personal diary, a reflection of her private thoughts and struggles. “She always had that diary in her bag,” he revealed, mentioning how the family would occasionally tease her about its contents.

Yet, respecting her privacy, they never read it. “She would openly share with us everything that was on her mind—from her work to her studies and anything that troubled her.”

The father holds a torn page from that diary, though he declined to disclose further details, noting that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had requested discretion regarding its contents.

The pain of losing his daughter under such horrific circumstances is palpable in his words. “The place where I sent my daughter to build a life and serve the people failed to protect her. It’s devastating,” he lamented.

The Supreme Court is set to address the matter on August 20. This tragic incident has ignited protests across the country, with junior doctors in West Bengal, Delhi, and other regions demanding justice for their fallen colleagues. Tensions are particularly high in Kolkata, where the Supreme Court has taken up the case suo motu.

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, has been questioned by the CBI over three days. Investigators are examining his phone records to piece together the events leading to the doctor’s death.

In a significant development, the Kolkata Police summoned Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray following his call for the CBI to interrogate the Kolkata police commissioner. Meanwhile, former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two prominent doctors have also been summoned for allegedly spreading rumors and revealing the victim’s identity.

The victim’s family has accused the West Bengal government of attempting to suppress the public outcry, despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s expressions of outrage.

The father, once a supporter of the Trinamool leader, expressed his disillusionment. “I used to have full faith in her, but now, no. She speaks of justice, but what is she doing about it? She has the power to act but does nothing.”

The victim’s mother echoed this sentiment, criticizing the much-publicized welfare schemes of the Banerjee administration, and dismissing them as hollow promises.
