Pune Porsche crash: Minor driver’s father, bar owners arrested

A great blow for the family of the 17-year-old boy whose Porsche caused a crash resulting in the death of another young man in Pune on Sunday has arrived as the father of the said minor has now been arrested. The owners of the bars where the minor allegedly procured alcohol have also been arrested.

The unfortunate incident occurred around 2:25 a.m. this morning in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, where two IT engineers lost their lives – anis Awadhiya and Aswini Koshta. The CCTV footage showed that the car, which was driven by the 17-year-old boy, was traveling at an estimated speed of 200 mph and smashed at the tail of the motorcycle which was carrying the victims.

The Pune Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, has mentioned that the minor was celebrating his class 12th results in a local club, and he was observed consuming alcohol directly before crashing the Volkswagen car. This violates the rule set by the age of 25 for legal drinking in Maharashtra.

The father has been arrested under the Juvenile Justice Act for willfully neglecting his child and getting intoxicating beverages for the minor. The bar owners are charged with catering illegal alcohol in their premises.

Since then, public concern has been directed at the Juvenile Justice Board for issuing bail for the cited minor within 15 hours. After the Pune police examined the child carefully, they applied for the child to be tried as an adult, given the nature of the crime.

As the investigation goes on, this case serves to highlight the need for serious and urgent intervention to the problem of underage consumption of alcohol and hazardous driving in the country.
