During a recent political rally, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed concerns over wealth inequality and the state of democracy in India. Gandhi highlighted that a meager one percent of the population possesses 40 percent of the country’s wealth, with 22 individuals holding as much wealth as 70 crore people.
Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to undermine the Indian constitution and democratic values, Gandhi pointed to statements made by BJP MPs indicating their intention to amend the constitution if they win elections. In contrast, Gandhi emphasized the Congress party’s commitment to protecting the constitution and the ideals of social reformer Basavanna.
Gandhi also criticized the Modi government’s alleged favoritism, stating that in the past decade, around 20-25 billionaires have emerged due to policies favoring individuals like Gautam Adani. He contrasted this with the Congress party’s proposed Nyay schemes, aimed at lifting millions from poverty and empowering them economically.
Furthermore, Gandhi drew attention to the rising unemployment under the current administration, likening it to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. He accused the government of waiving loans amounting to Rs 16 lakh crore, equivalent to 25 years of MNREGA wages.
The rally took place in Ballari, Karnataka, coinciding with the second phase of voting for 14 Lok Sabha constituencies. The remaining 14 seats are scheduled for polling on May 7.
