In a recent gesture to stand in unison with the sufferers, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi recently took a tour of the flood-ridden areas of the Cachar district of Assam and the violence-stricken areas of Manipur. It was the first time he had visited the Northeast region after assuming charge as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Gandhi first arrived via the Silchar airport in the State of Assam, where he was received by Congress leaders. He then proceeded to Fulertal, where he engaged the affected populace in relief camps, asking them about the difficulties they go through, given the fact that floods are severe in the area.
Gandhi then moved to Manipur’s Jiribam, where he visited a rehabilitation camp in a school. He interacted with the displaced people who had been affected by the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki groups.
Rahul Gandhi’s Manipur visit took him to Churachandpur, another area most affected by ethnic carnage. Wendy works there, and in her free time, she moves around the area, greeting the residents to learn how they feel and what hardships they endure.
Gandhi’s tours to the Northeast occurred while the Congress and the BJP escalated their verbal volleys over the management of the upheavals in the area.
