Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of BJP sparks heated debate in Lok Sabha

Speaking on the inter-faith intolerance in the country, Gandhi said the prime minister had ‘promoted violence and hate’ within the Hindu community. The first week of the 18th Lok Sabha session saw a war of words between the BJP and the opposition Congress Party.

The second week of the session started on Monday, July 1, and here, the opposition INDIA bloc is likely to pressure the government over matters that include the NEET bribery scandal and the Agnipath or the latest military recruitment plan. Two variables will also probably be involved among indexes with lesser frequency: inflation and unemployment.

In the debate during the proceedings, BJP member and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur moved an adjournment motion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address that will be seconded by a first-term Lok Sabha Member Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the BJP veteran and the former external affairs minister, late Sushma Swaraj.

The Lok Sabha’s 16-hour debate on the Motion of Thanks is scheduled to end with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on Tuesday. The general debate in the RS has been allotted 21 hours, and the Prime Minister is expected to reply on Wednesday.

Earlier, the INDIA bloc in the opposition threatened to carry out a protest in Parliament on Monday to demand a debate on the NEET-UG paper leak issue, which was turned down by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday.

The demand for a specific debate on the NEET row also resulted in the prorogation of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Friday as the two sides were at loggerheads on the issue.

This session of Parliament may also see more heated arguments on many issues, with government and opposition parties competing for power.
