Renowned filmmaker Shyam Bengal passes away at 90

Veteran director and screenwriter Shyam Benegal passed away on December 23 at 6:30 pm, and his daughter Pia Benegal confirmed to India today.

Eminent filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday after battling a chronic kidney-related disease for days. The 90-year-old filmmaker passed away at around 6:30 pm at the Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, his daughter Pia Benegal confirmed to India Today.

Shyam Benegal was known for films like Ankur, Mandi, Manthan, and more, most of which were released in the mid-70s or 80s. These films came to be known as part of parallel cinema in India.

The filmmaker was celebrating his birthday on 14 December with friends and family. Some of the noted actors who graced the event included Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Shabana Azmi, Rajit Kapur, Atul Tiwari, filmmaker-actor Kunal Kapoor, son of veteran actor Shashi Kapoor, and others.

The Government of India conferred Padma Shri on Benegal in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. Manthan, Zubeidaa, and Sardaari Begum are some of the successful films that he made.

Shyam Benegal was born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad. He belonged to a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. His father, Sridhar B. Benegal, was a photographer from Karnataka who sparked Shyam’s interest in filmmaking.

Shyam made his first film when he was 12 years old, using a camera given by his father. He also pursued his Master’s degree in Economics from Osmania University, Hyderabad, where he initiated the Hyderabad Film Society, beginning his great cinematic journey.
