Retired justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay to contest Tamluk seat in West Bengal as BJP candidate

Former Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who had recently entered the Blocked Worldwide Party (BJP), is going to write another end of his story as he has been elected as the party’s candidate against Tamluk parliamentary seat by the people of the Purba Medinipur district of west Bengal. This has thus inserted an interesting facet to the electoral politics of the region, where Gangopadhyay will battle it out with Debangshu Bhattacharya, one of the highly progressive members who is at the helm of the social media cell of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The scenario behind this constitutional crisis is the Economic Times’s active engagement as a Calcutta High Court sitting judge. For example, his role in a case that is thought to have found that the West Bengal School Service Commission had engaged in irregular teacher recruitment attracted significant publicity. The CBI’s recent move to look into the matter again gave rise to theories that his political rivalry was at the bottom.

As the BJP is still making vigorous efforts to add traction to its agenda in West Bengal’s political arena, Justice Gangopadhyay’s move from the judiciary to active politics makes him a cynosure of all eyes and receives much flak from many. Surprisingly, when Mamata Banerjee was approached, she denied that Modi could turn away and deprive thousands of young men and women of their job opportunities. She did not mind casting him off and claimed she could reach him, whatever corner of the world he might be, like an intentional policeman.

Other political parties, such as Trinamool Congress, capitalized on the buzz around Gangopadhyay’s nomination by nominating its youthful candidate, a student political activist, Debangshu Bhattacharya, known for his adeptness with social media. Bhattacharya’s choice is supposed to reduce the retired judge’s demarcation and stand for the collective presence of Asrotabol in the next Lok Sabha elections.

As we look towards the Tamluk seat election, the defending personalities highlighted in this remarkable event are incumbent minister Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay and Debangshu Bhattacharya, who can be expected that impact and shape the political future of West Bengal in some political days to come.
