RG Kar Medical College protests to demand accountability after the attack

Yet the trainee doctors and medical students of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata are planning to tender their resignations over the frequent acts of violence against doctors there—the latest being an Independence Day eve attack by a mob.

The protesters demanded the dismissal of the college’s Principal, the Commissioner of Police, the Officer in Charge of Tala, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police for what the protesters described as the “shameful” violence against the students.

Besides the tendency of mass resignation, the students have demanded the immediate deployment of central forces for their protection, pointing out several instances where their safety was compromised. Such protestations arise from doubts about the efficiency of the Kolkata Police in dealing with these matters.

The CBI is already handling the probe related to the rape murder of a trainee doctor in the hospital in December, and the protesters want immediate action –arrest the main suspects who have evidence to substantiate the charges.

Other demands include compulsory dismissal and public apology from the ex-principal, medical superintendent, dean of students, and other staff members who participated in the event. Further, the Swasthya Bhavan invitees have been required to justify why the resignation of the former principal was not accepted earlier.

The doctors, nursing staff, and students have threatened to down tools and refuse to go to work until justice has been done in this case, hammering the defense that accountability and security measures need to be enhanced in and around the health facility.
