Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has raised serious objections to the alleged nexus of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and a Hungarian-American businessman, George Soros. He asserted that such issues must not be seen through a political prism and called for unity against what he termed “anti-India forces.” Rijiju said, “It is an important issue that I want to raise without doing politics over it. The links between Sonia Gandhi and George Soros are serious. We do not want to see it through a political spin.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Sonia Gandhi of having links with Soros’s foundation-funded organisations, which purportedly promote controversial stands on issues like Kashmir being an independent entity. The BJP cited her as former co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, which they claimed had called for Kashmir independence. The party further cited the collaborations between the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Soros-linked organizations to prove foreign influence in internal matters.
While Rijiju dismissed any intention to interfere in Congress’s internal politics, he noted emerging questions about Rahul Gandhi’s leadership within the INDIA alliance. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey announced plans to confront Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in Parliament regarding these alleged connections, accusing Soros and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) of collaborating with opposition leaders to harm India’s economy.
Opposition leaders dismissed the BJP’s allegations, as Congress MP Karti Chidambaram called them “dark fantasies.” The controversy has put the spotlight on OCCRP, which, the BJP said, publishes reports that are aimed at destabilizing India. The U.S. government has denied BJP’s accusation, explaining that its funding provides for independent journalism and doesn’t affect editorial decisions.
