Roof Collapses at Delhi’s Hyatt regency and airport spark concerns

The threat of roof collapse has emerged as a major concern among Delhi’s infrastructures, as two serious incidents have occurred in the space of a few days.

The previous event was experienced on Monday night in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, whereby a temporary shed within the compound of the hotel suffered some partial collapse and injured two people who were trapped. All the affected persons were immediately taken to the nearest Fortis Hospital, and they are receiving treatment.

This incident occurred just within a week after the roof at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport domestic terminal caved in, causing the death of one person and affecting thousands of passengers’ intended plans of traveling.

Investigations have been conducted to find out why the buildings fell late. As in many organizations and government structures, a technical committee has been formed at the airport to make an estimate; structural engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, are involved in this step. The investigation results will be released within a month, and the decision to continue work in the given terminal will be made.

Domestic airlines in the country have been lobbying their flights to different terminals, causing inconveniences, and some have even been canceled. These infrastructural breakdowns have had numerous implications, including delays and inconvenience for passengers.

The episodes have raised concerns, making people wonder about the standards of maintenance and safety of many of Delhi’s better-known public places. Thus, the authorities will be under pressure to investigate the problems and guarantee people’s and tourists’ security while elaborating on the investigations.
