The first passenger service on the priority section of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System—Delhi-Meerut RRTS—was launched on October 21, 2023, with three coaches.
On Monday, India’s first RRTS service completed one year of operations. In the last 365 days, it has served more than 40 lakh passengers. This is the first-of-its-kind train service in India, connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut.
“. Since October 21, 2023, the Namo Bharat trains have completely overhauled commutation in Ghaziabad, Sahibabad, and the adjacent localities while successfully ferrying more than 40 lakh passengers in its first year of operations,” mentions an official statement of National Capital Region Transport Corporation, NCRTC. “
The Ghaziabad RRTS Station has seen maximum footfall in the last year, followed by Sahibabad and Modinagar North RRTS Stations,” it reads.
The service also entered Meerut at the commencement of the Meerut South station.
Delhi: A trial run for the service, which will connect New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar RRTS station with the already operational Sahibabad station, also began earlier this month.
To mark a year since its first anniversary, the minister of housing and urban affairs and minister of power, Manohar Lal Khattar, took a ride on the service and visited critical stations along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor.
He boarded the Namo Bharat train from Sahibabad station, the first operational station on the Delhi side.
The minister also visited the under-construction Anand Vihar RRTS station. Anticipated to be one of the busiest crossing points in the region, this is due to being just adjacent to two Metro lines, a railway station, and two inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs) of Delhi and Kaushambi in the Uttar Pradesh State.
Multimodal connectivity at the station ensures a smooth transition from one mode of transport to another, hence making everyday commutes convenient and easily accessible and creating a comprehensive network of networks.
