This piece also scooped that in a major political event, the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s chief, Uddhav Thackeray, has declared that he will cancel the Dharavi slum redevelopment mission in Mumbai if his party is to win the Maharashtra assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
In a press conference, Thackeray heavily criticized the project while also saying, ‘We are not going to allow it.’ The company offered different incentives for redevelopment. Still, Thackeray dismissed it as a ‘Ladka Mitra Yojna (favourite friend scheme). ’ Speaking about his party, Thackeray said that the power would not offer any additional incentives, and if it did, it would float a new tender.
In the same month, former Maharashtra’s chief minister Prithviraj Chavan sounded alarm bells, describing the project as a ‘big scam’. Chavan said that the project lifter would be abandoned as soon as there is a new government after the next assembly elections.
The Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), both part of Maha Vikas Aghadi, the leading opposition in the state, are openly opposing the Dharavi redevelopment project led by the Adani group. The regenerated opposition is set to aggravate the existing challenges to the project’s future.
