The police informed that the incident occurred when the 5 tribal girl minors were returning from a wedding in the Rania area of Jharkhand. Police have detained 18 minor boys as part of the alleged gangrape of five minor tribal girls in Jharkhand’s Khunti, according to reports. Police informed that the accused boys aged over 16 would face trial as adults, news agency ANI reported.

Police officials had earlier confirmed to news agency PTI that the accused minors, aged between 12-17, had been sent to a juvenile home.

The attack occurred on Friday evening, late at night, when the five girls, three of whom were aged 12-16, were raped by the boys according to the police complaint submitted by family members. The girls were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony in Rania.

Khunti SP Aman Kumar stated, “The incident came to light on Sunday after the complaint was registered at Rania police station.” Following a complaint being registered, the police formed a team and arrested the 18 minors in quick succession.

As per the girl’s statement, the police lodged a case against the accused boys under sections 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), 127 (2) (wrongful confinement), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 109 (1) (attempt to murder) and 70 (2) (gang rape of women below 18 years) of the BNS and sections 4 (penetrative sexual assault) and 8
