Spanish Tourist Gang-raped in Jharkhand, Actor Condemns ‘Rotten Society’
A Spanish woman cycling through India with her husband was allegedly gang-raped by seven men in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, sparking outrage.
The incident occurred late Friday when the couple, both tourists, stopped to camp for the night in Hansdiha. As they slept in a tent, a group of men attacked, beating them, robbing them, and raping the woman.
Three suspects were quickly arrested as police formed a special team to hunt down the other attackers. The victims, aged around 30, were hospitalized in Dumka with injuries.
In an emotional video message, the survivor said seven men raped her during the horrific assault. “They beat us, robbed us… what they wanted was to rape me,” she recounted.
The incident prompted criticism from Bollywood actor Richa Chadha, who condemned India’s “rotten society” where foreigners face attacks similar to local women.
According to officials, the couple was biking from Bangladesh towards Nepal, passing through Jharkhand and Bihar. After being escorted by police, they received medical treatment at a Dumka hospital.
Doctors said while the man sustained minor injuries, the woman will be examined by a medical board. The civil surgeon said both tourists are now out of danger.
The sexual assault is the latest in a string of high-profile rape cases that have put a spotlight on women’s safety in India. Police are investigating the attack amid public anger over the failure to prevent such crimes.
