The girl alleged that she was sexually assaulted by two unidentified persons while walking on the university campus along with a friend.
Anna University in Chennai, south India, witnessed protests by student political parties after a female student alleged sexual assault by two unidentified persons inside the campus while she was walking with a male friend.
According to reports, the victim was a 19-year-old engineering student who was sexually assaulted by two persons when a friend accompanied her. The matter came to light when she filed a complaint on December 24 (Tuesday).
While there were initial rumours, Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian confirmed that one person had been detained and that the investigation is on. Even within the university, a committee has been formed to investigate the matter, and four special police teams have been formed to nab the accused.
The incident led to furious protest marches as SFI and All India Women Welfare Federation members staged demonstrations outside the campus demanding justice for the victim.
BJP leaders K Annamalai and Narayanan Thirupathy condemned the crime and attacked the DMK government for not effectively restraining violence against women. “Under the DMK Government, Tamil Nadu has now transformed into a breeding place for unlawful activities and home of criminals.
Women have started losing their safety feeling across the State as it sees the Police busywork put by the ruling administration for silencing the oppositions,” Annamalai further said on X.
