NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has started her return to Earth after living on the International Space Station (ISS) for over nine months. The departure on March 18 brings to a close a long mission that has drawn the interest of many, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a personal gesture, PM Modi wrote to Williams, the pride of 1.4 billion Indians, in a letter that was revealed by Jitendra Singh, the Minister of Science and Technology of India. The letter, which was released to the press, identifies the astronaut’s inspirational zeal and determination during her stay onboard.
Modi looked back on discussions with astronaut Mike Massimino at an event in Delhi, where her achievement was being feted. He added that every time he traveled to the United States, he would ask about her well-being from the President, highlighting how important she is to the country.
The Prime Minister recognized Williams’ family, referring to her mother, Bonnie Pandya, who is probably eagerly waiting for her return. He also honored her late father, Deepak Pandya, stating, “I am sure that Late Deepakbhai’s blessings are with you as well.”
While Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore undocked from the ISS, the wait for her return to India intensified. Modi wished that when she arrived, she would be given a hero’s welcome, saying, “It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its illustrious daughters.”
In his valedictory statement, the Prime Minister wished both Williams and Wilmore, and also regards to Michael Williams, his very best. The country eagerly awaits to rejoice in the return of a trailblazing astronaut who has inspired countless with her journey among the stars.
