Supporters Blockade Highway After Sonam Wangchuk Detained

The supporters, led by Sonam Wangchuk, marched towards Delhi to press upon the government to reopen the negotiations on demands, including giving Ladakh a constitutional status by listing it in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

New Delhi: The detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk by Delhi Police at the Singhu border Monday night, while his supporters and he were marching to the national capital, led to tension in the Union Territory of Ladakh, where he is leading a fight to safeguard the local ecology.

This morning, nearly two dozen protesters mounted crude blockades – including sticks mounted across upturned traffic cones – on National Highway 1, about six km from Fiang.

The blockades reportedly trapped tourists, including foreigners. The situation between these blockades is now understood to be tense but calm.

Visuals show at least protesters behind a blockade, with about 100 cars and 50 trucks parked behind them.

We are stuck on NH1 due to protests by supporters of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who have put several blockades on the highway and are not allowing anyone to pass by.

Phillipe Gelfand, a tourist stranded on the road, told NDTV in a phone conversation that approximately 200 to 300 people were stranded.
