Supreme Court hears Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case

The Supreme Court re-opened hearing on Thursday on the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at Kolkata. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud rubbished the idea of ‘151 grams of semen’ said to have been recovered from the victim and pulled up CBI counsel for presenting arguments seen on social media channels.

The Chief Justice called on striking doctors to get back to work, saying no harm would be meted out to them. The three-judge bench stressed that they are necessary to sustain health services needed by the public.

As noted by the CBI’s status report, the crime scene was tampered with, making the victim’s family think that she had committed suicide. The investigation seems to have converged on one suspect, a civic volunteer by the name of Sanjoy Roy, who was however arrested on the 9th of August when the doctor’s almost nude body was found.

Some of the critical aspects of the hearing are the issues about how the investigation was conducted and when the GD entry and police crime scene control were conducted. The court seeks to establish the truth about medical negligence and its vicissitudes concerning public health and the medical fraternity.
