Supreme Court notice to ED on Hemant Soren’s bail plea in money laundering case

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate after Hemant Soren, the previous Jharkhand Chief Minister, applied for respite from custodial interrogation in an illegal gratification case. The court’s decision was on Monday, spiking the excitement to the next level before another hearing is scheduled for next week.

While the Supreme Court is handling another appeal related to Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, who has also filed a complaint against his own, was taken by the ED in the ED.

Counsels are waiting for the same bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta only because of the latest developments on the matter.

However, the appeal filed by Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister today, in the Supreme Court challenges the earlier High Court’s decision to ignore his PIL to end his arrest while accused of money laundering cases linked with an old taxation system.

Kejriwal spent 29 consecutive days in jail since his first arrest on March 21, a rare dignity that very few people get to experience. The ED has filed its counter-affidavit, and Kejriwal has submitted his rejoinder.

Although Hemant Soren adopted legal measures by going to the Supreme Court for relief and the cancellation of his arrest, senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for Soren before the bench and put forward arguments that the judgment in the case of Jharkhand High Court, where Soren challenged his arrest, is still pending and was reserved in the early part of February. Soren has now delivered his pre-trial bail application.

The implications of such high-profile cases made the developments in them gather global attention. Many observers closely awaited the Supreme Court’s decisions on the postponed interim bails appealed by Hemant Soren and Arvind Kejriwal.
