Supreme Court questions state fund priorities for judges’ pay

SC conveyed its concern Tuesday over the unequal state funding “Despite governments managing funds to give fiscal sops to those who don’t work, the same govts cite funds constraints not giving adequate compensation with regard to sal and pension in respect of dis judiciary judges “, sc said.

During the hearing, Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih said this as Attorney General R Venkataramani argued that financial constraints have to be considered while determining the pay structure and retirement benefits of judicial officers.

States have all the money for the people who don’t do any work. Come election time, new schemes like ‘ladli behna’ are announced and fixed amounts are paid. In Delhi also, different parties are promising Rs 2,500 if they come to power,” the bench said while indicating this irony of government priorities in spending.

The Attorney General pressed for the real apprehension of financial burdens to be brought on record. He made these comments during the hearing of a petition filed in 2015 by the All India Judges Association for improvement in pension provisions for retired judges.

The Supreme Court had, sometime back, expressed its anguish over the pension amounts drawn by some retired high court judges ranging between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 as “pitiable”.
