Supreme Court reserves decision on Kejriwal’s bail pleas

The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce its order in connection with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail applications and petition against the CBI’s arrest in connection with an alleged excise policy scam. The case was heard before Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, JJ.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi for Kejriwal said that this is the only case in which he has been granted bail twice under PMLA. Singhvi said Kejriwal is not a threat in the case at present and needs to get regular bail from the trial court.

He also said that the CBI actions were an “insurance arrest” after Kejriwal got bail in the ED case. Also, it can be pointed out that all other co-accused persons in the excise case are out of jail, which makes many ask when Kejriwal was arrested.

The Supreme Court gave bail to other high-profile persons in the same case over the same year. Kejriwal has filed two petitions against his arrest and non-granting of bail. In contrast, the Delhi High Court has supported the arrest as legal due to the apprehensions of interference with the witnesses. A production warrant in the said matter has been granted for Kejriwal until September 11, keeping him in custody until then.
