The high court has provided its input as a part of what has stunned the nation and the medical profession as a whole: the rape-murder case of a doctor from Kolkata. The hearing of the case will be presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud in a bench of three judges on Tuesday.
The matter is now subjudice in the Calcutta High Court, which recently directed the case to be handed over to the CBI, overriding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ban on the state police’s ultimatum.
More and more people are beginning to question the police’s conduct in the case in terms of the delay in allowing the family of the victim to identify the body and the unnecessarily swift apprehension of a civic volunteer. A lot of doctors have taken time and asked whether the fact that the girl was very badly hurt means many people assaulted her.
To this end, the BJP has accused the police of a cover-up, with a violent episode at the hospital during a women’s protest on 15th August only furthering their claim.
The prime accused, Sanjoy Roy, a charitable person involved in the civic hospital, was caught from the building where the doctor was reported to have been killed. A Bluetooth headset that was associated with him was found to have been left close to her remains.
