Supreme Court to hear Arvind Kejriwal’s plea against ED arrest

The Supreme Court of India will be hearing a plea filed by Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi Chief Minister) challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which is the independent body to enforce government laws. The hearing slated for April 15, came in the wake of Delhi High Court’s ruling on April 9, as it upheld the validity of Kejriwal continuous detention.

Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED has been booked on a money laundering case which is regarded under the investigation of the Delhi excise policy case. He was taken into police custody recently under the capacities of judicial custody according to a Delhi court verdict which was effective until April 15.

On the heels of the Delhi High Court verdict, Kejriwal, now, exercised the option of appealing the verdict in the Supreme Court. This Bench which is composed of Jusses Saniv Khunna and Dipankar Datta will play the role of the presiding body of the proceedings.

The arrest of Kejriwal has been one of the controversial ones. The Delhi High Court ruled that the ED already had sufficient ground to effect the arrest. The court also highlighted that the arrest was a direct consequence of Kejriwal’s actions, as there was no choice in considerate action for the ED.

Meanwhile, the ED argues that its actions are not targeted at anybody in particular and are done in the exercise of its lawful power. Organized as it is, AAP has already created a major case for itself, not to mention the fact that Mr. Kejriwal serves as the chief minister of Delhi as well as the head of the political party.

With the hearing of Kejriwal’s case at the Supreme Court on the horizon, the public will learn whether or not the current probe into the alleged illegal handling of money will be suspended due to the contempt of court case.
