Taliban appoints student as Afghan envoy in Mumbai

The Taliban regime of Afghanistan has nominated Ikramuddin Kamil, who has a PhD in international law from New Delhi’s South Asia University, as the ‘acting consul’ to its Mumbai mission. The proposal is waiting for India’s approval. The Taliban move comes a week after an Indian delegation visited Kabul.

Talib in Arabic means student, and in a curious coincidence, the Taliban regime in Kabul has proposed the name of a student who studied in New Delhi as the Acting Consul at Afghanistan’s Consulate in Mumbai.

According to Afghanistan’s Tolo News, Ikramuddin Kamil, who started his studies in India seven years ago, has been named the envoy for the consulate in Mumbai. This comes amidst a period of relative diplomatic quiet following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, after which India severed the official relationship with its neighbor.

Partly excerpted from: Hindustan Times  Called the proposal, it is still awaiting approval from New Delhi. If approved, this would be the first diplomatic appointment by the Taliban to any Afghan mission in India since they seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

Ikramuddin Kamil, 35, an Afghan national, has been in India for the last seven years, pursuing a PhD in international law at South Asia University in Delhi on a scholarship provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the Taliban’s deputy foreign minister for political affairs, also announced the development, confirming Kamil’s new role on social media.
