Tamil Nadu assembly suspends opposition over disruptions

In a move that has stirred up the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, the state assembly has passed a resolution to suspend the Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and other AIADMK MLAs for the entire session. This decision comes after a directive from the Tamil Nadu Speaker, M. Appavu, who had earlier ordered the eviction of AIADMK members from the House due to disruptive behavior.

The opposition party members, dressed in black shirts after a one-day suspension on Tuesday, attempted to raise the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy again in the Assembly and sought an adjournment to discuss the issue. The AIADMK MLAs had demanded the adjournment of the Question and Answer session and raised slogans concerning the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, leading to a tumultuous scene in the Assembly.

Speaking on the matter, Speaker Appavu stated, “The AIADMK whip gave notice to raise the issue. But they were not prepared to listen to my reply. Instead, they disrupted the proceedings (during Question Hour) and denigrated the decorum of the House through their conduct.”

The suspension of the Leader of the Opposition and other AIADMK MLAs for the entire session is seen as a strong stance by the ruling DMK government to maintain order and discipline in the state assembly.

In a separate development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has introduced a resolution in the State Assembly urging the Central Government to immediately begin the delayed census work, including a caste-based population census.

The resolution stated,

“This House considers that a caste-based population census is essential to formulate policies to ensure equal rights and equal opportunities in education, economy, and employment for every citizen of India.”

The move to conduct a caste-based census has been a long-standing demand of various political parties and social groups in the state, and the introduction of this resolution is seen as a significant step towards addressing the issue.

As the political drama unfolds in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, political observers and the public are expected to watch the upcoming sessions closely.
