Tamil Nadu: Girl assaulted, 13 abused at fake NCC camp, 11 arrested

A girl was sexually harassed, and thirteen other children were sexually abused at a bogus NCC camp at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. At least 11 people, including the organizer of the camp and the school principal, have been arrested, police disclosed on Monday (August 19).

The police also report that among the detainees are two teachers as well as a correspondent. The private school had no unit of the NCC, and the organizers informed the management that such a camp would enable them to form one, police said.

The NCC was compelled to release a statement to the effect that those involved in the episode do not belong to the National Cadet Corps.

“It is on August 19, that media reported an incident of alleged sexual harassment of school girls attending a fake NCC camp identified as fake NCC persons in Bargur, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu,” the statement said and added: “The reported incident does not pertain to any of the institutions registered/enrolled with the NCC. The personnel involved in the alleged incident have no connection with NCC. Also, no NCC

This is despite uproar and angry demonstrations across the country over the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

As it later turned out, the police claimed that the school did not perform background checks on the group it hired for the so-called camp. According to them, 41 students in total, with 17 females, participated in the earlier three days’ camp held this month.

Police also disclosed that the girls claimed that they were taken out of an auditorium where they slept and were defiled. They said there were no teachers to monitor the camp.
