In a sad turn of events, a 26-year-old teacher was murdered on school premises for allegedly refusing to marry in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. The deceased, Ramani, was attacked at the Mallipattanam Government School by one Madhan, aged 30, on Monday morning. Suffering severe injuries to her neck, she was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries en route.
Police have arrested Madhan and are questioning him. A senior police officer said the attack seemed to be of a personal nature.
Investigations showed that the families of Ramani and Madhan had recently met over their marriage, and she had rejected the proposal. Madhan then went to the school and attacked her with a sharp weapon.
The School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamizhi, has condemned the incident and ordered immediate counseling for students traumatized by the tragedy. He condemned the violence while on his way to Thanjavur, saying such acts against teachers are intolerable.
“We strongly condemn the attack on Ramani, a committed teacher in Mallipattanam Government School. Strong legal action will be taken against the assailant,” he said in an online message, offering his condolences to Ramani’s family, students, and fellow teachers.
