The US has shown its complete support for India when it openly stated that Chinese attempts to change the names of the areas located in Arunachal Pradesh (a state in the northeastern region of India) are unacceptable.
In reaction, a spokesperson for the State Department has stated that the US has strictly opposed unilateral acts that entail renaming Indian northeastern areas. Through the unauthorized naming of six places in Arunachal Pradesh, China, by effect, planned to intrude upon its illegal possession of the area, said the official.
This remains the case in the context of manifest tensions between India and China regarding the Ladakh border standoff, which began in 2020. The People’s Republic of China usually expresses its dissatisfaction if top officials of India visit Arunachal Pradesh or receive the Dalai Lama, whom it considers the second in command of the Tibetan government in exile.
The US efforts demonstrate that such moves will be met by a balanced reaction that will stop China’s expansionism in the area. It is perceived as an affirmation of the long-standing strategic partners India and the US enhancing bilateral trust at a time when both countries are united in resisting the Chinese side.
Another example is that China’s previous position on infrastructure and hydropower scheme projects in Arunachal Pradesh has attracted international criticism. Besides the US, other countries and the UN have now called for China to respect India’s independence and statehood. The respective Chinese countries could be faced with further consequences economically and diplomatically.
