Three workers killed in Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train collapse

At least three workers were confirmed dead in the collapse of an under-construction structure for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project near Vasad in the Anand district on Tuesday. A fourth worker caught in the debris was taken out and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

An accident occurred at around 5 PM when a temporary structure of a steel and concrete arrangement used by the foundation collapsed at that construction site near the Mahi River. Anand district superintendent of police, Gaurav Jasani, confirmed the dead bodies present in the place with the words:

“Three workers have been killed on the spot, two patients were admitted into the nearby hospital, from whom one died because of excessive injuries, one worker could be rescued out from this debris, where he dies, and another who is living is under treatment for his injuries.”.

National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited, the implementing agency, stated that four workers were caught between concrete blocks after the accident. Police and fire brigade officials reached the spot and started their work.

It was the second fatal accident on the site of the high-speed bullet train project within months. In August, a laborer was killed, and at least six others were injured when a construction crane collapsed near Kambola village in the Vadodara district.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is India’s first bullet train project covering 508 kilometers. This railway will be able to cover a speed of 320 kilometers per hour.

Using Japanese Shinkansen technology, travel between the two cities will now be shorter—six hours, now two hours under the project. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that operations would begin between Surat and Billimora in South Gujarat in 2026.
