TMC MP Apologizes for revealing Kolkata rape victim’s identity

Our own Rachana Banerjee has come forward and has shared a video on her social media handle where she is protesting against the incident. The name of the victim was also shown at the end of the video.

In response to the brutal attacks, the Trinamool Congress MP and Bengali actor Rachana Banerjee have apologized for publishing the media identification of the raped and killed trainee doctor in the RG Kar Medical College of Kolkata on August 9.

She was later to tender an apology for identifying the victim on social media when a complaint had been made against her.

Rachana Banerjee had come forward to react to the incident a few weeks ago when she recorded a video on her social media handle. After several minutes of displaying the provocative images, at the last shot of the video, the name of the victim was shown.

The complaint included the names of some top TMC leaders and demanded immediate legal action against the TMC MP.

The complaint said that Banerjee “recklessly” repeated the name of the victim multiple times, “thus worsening the trauma of the victim and putting her in even more danger and disrespect.”.

At the same time, Banerjee owned up to her error and offered an apology. She said she had removed the video that was causing all the trouble.

Batting for herself on India Today TV, Banerjee said that she mentioned the name of the victim because she was speaking the ‘heartfelt’ message.

“Yeah, I think it was a very big mistake on my side. I shouldn’t have done that. I should have called her ‘Tilottama’ like everyone else calls her. Well, behind making this video, I was very sad and emotional, and I said all the things from my heart, and they were not scripted, and though I was emotional, that name came to my mind,” she said.
