A new twist in the case is that arrested Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy has said that he received death threats on the case of arrested party leader Jayant Singh. It was alleged that four-term MP from the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency Roy received threatening calls from an unknown number to release Jayant Singh involved in the cash-for-vote scandal.
Jayant Singh, a TMC leader of the Ariadaha area in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, was arrested last week for allegedly instigating mob violence on June 30. Roy said that the caller to the station said he would personally behead him if the police did not release Jayant Singh. “The person on the other end asked me, insisting that If I failed to facilitate the release of Jayant Singh, I would be mauled down,” said the MP.
They also cautioned Roy against going to the Ariadaha area and spewed abuses to him. After that, the MP said he reported the same to the Barrackpore Police Commissioner and opened a case on threats made to him.
Jayant Singh was arrested in 2023 in another case that involved him and had always been out on bail but he had to sign a bond that assured him to cease engaging in any unlawful behaviors. He is now being charged with violating that condition, and thus new charges have been laid against him. The recent occurrences have escalated the situation in the region and have been compounded by the MP’s security issues.
