In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old IPS officer died in a road accident in the Hassan district of Karnataka while he was on his way to take up his first posting, the police said on Monday. The officer was identified as Harsh Bardhan, a 2023-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, hailing from Madhya Pradesh.

The accident occurred Sunday evening when the vehicle he was traveling in suffered a tire burst near Kittane in Hassan taluk. The driver lost control of the car, which hit a house and a tree on the roadside, the police said.

The police said that Bardhan was going to Hassan to assume the charge as a probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police in Holenarasipur.

The officer sustained severe head injuries, leading to his death in the hospital during treatment. The driver, Manjegowda, suffered minor injuries.

Bardhan, son of a sub-divisional magistrate, had recently completed his four-week training at the Karnataka Police Academy in Mysuru.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condoled the family of the deceased officer.

Saddened to hear about the death of probationary IPS officer Harsh Bardhan in a horrific accident near the Kittane border of the Hassan-Mysuru Highway. Sadly, such an accident happened when he was on his way to take charge of an IPS office. This shouldn’t have happened when the years of hard work were being rewarded,” he posted on X.
