A tragic incident was reported that involved the death of at least seven newborns due to a fire that occurred at a children’s hospital in Vivek Vihar, a locality in East Delhi, in the early hours of Sunday. The police arrested Dr Naveen, the owner of the baby care center, whom the police had been looking for since the occurrence of the main incident on Sunday.
The incident, which was likely caused by a cylinder explosion, quickly fanned the flames around the hospital, trapping many infants.
Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg described the operation as “very tough” for field officers, as the teams had to fight the fire while also trying to save people.
The Delhi Police has registered a case under Intentional Grievous Harm, Medical Negligence, and Death, causing danger to others against the doctor who owns the Baby Care New Born Hospital by the name of Dr. Naveen Chinchi. There are ongoing investigations to possibly establish if the hospital had a fire NOC in its possession.
Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has condemned the mishap and announced Financial assistance of Rs.200,000 for one eligible family member of each deceased and Rs.50,000 for those grievously injured in the mishap.
President Droupadi Murmu condoled the death, while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the State Minister for Health Saurabh Bharadwaj vowed to ensure that anyone involved in such negligence faces the full wrath of the law.
One can only imagine the importance of fire and safety measures, which themselves became the main cause of the tragedy and the necessity for proper investigation in the healthcare industry.
