Tragic suicide incident at Mumbai’s Atal Setu bridge

In a shocking incident, a man allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the Atal Setu connecting the city to Navi Mumbai. The police further said that the body is yet to be recovered from the sea, and rescue efforts are underway.

The incident occurred at around 10 am, wherein a man parked his red Maruti Brezza and jumped off the bridge, as per the CCTV footage the authorities have viewed. His identity is not yet known.

Atal Setu was thrown open in January of this year and measures over 8 km. It is India’s longest sea bridge. Ever since its inauguration, there has been a spate of suicide attempts from the bridge.

In August, a woman jumped from the bridge but was saved by a cab driver and police personnel. The dramatic rescue, captured on CCTV cameras, showed how quickly the quick-thinking driver and officers pulled her to safety just in time.

This July, a 38-year-old got out of a Tata Nexon running in the middle of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and jumped to death. Besides, just three months after the bridge’s inauguration, a 43-year-old doctor left a suicide note for her father and jumped off the structure.

These incidents reflect continuous concerns over mental health and the requirement of support systems within the community.
