Sources reported that the Trinamool MP, in the meeting on the Waqf bill, picked up a glass water bottle and hit it on the table, and he accidentally hurt himself.
The Waqf Bill Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting turned ugly on Tuesday as Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee injured his hand after smashing a glass water bottle.
Sources said that during a heated argument between BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay and Kalyan Banerjee, he struck the glass water bottle and injured his hand.
Sources told India Today TV that JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal has suspended Banerjee from the next meeting of the Waqf Bill panel. The decision to suspend the Trinamool MP was carried by a nine-to-seven vote.
Reports suggest that Trinamool MP picked up a glass water bottle and, hitting it on the table with all his might, hurt himself by accident. Banerjee required four stitches in the process.
He was later seen being taken back to the meeting room by Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM chief, and Sanjay Singh of the AAP.
The meeting at the Parliament Annexe had to be stopped temporarily.
The committee, headed by BJP’s Jagdambika Pal, had heard the views of a group of retired judges and lawyers when the Opposition members questioned their stake in the issue.
Sources said Kalyan Banerjee started speaking out of turn because he wanted to raise a point. However, the BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay objected. Sources said Banerjee then used unparliamentary language against him, leading to a verbal spat.
