Referring to strained ties between the two nations after he accused New Delhi of a role in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year, Trudeau said he discussed “the work that we need to do” with PM Modi.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he had a “brief exchange” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday at a summit in Laos.
According to him, he spoke to PM Modi about the “work that we need to do,” an apparent reference to strained ties between the two nations after he alleged New Delhi’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year.
There is work that we need to do, Trudeau said at a press conference in Laos.
“This is one of our top priorities, and I’m not going to go into details about what we talked about, but I have said many times that the safety of Canadians and keeping law and order is one of the fundamental responsibilities of any Canadian government, and that’s what I’ll stay focused on,” he said.
In the meeting with Canadian journalists, Trudeau said that Canada needs to build its trade and people-to-people ties with India, “but there are real issues that we need to solve, and we’re going to stay focused on that.”
The chief of Khalistan Tiger Force, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who the Indian Government ad wanted, was kil, led in a targeted shooting in Canada’s Surrey in June 2023.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were “credible allegations” that Indian agents had been involved in the killing of Najjar. India rejected Trudeau’s charges, saying they are “absurd” and “motivated.”.
