Twelve naxalites killed in Chhattisgarh security operation

On January 21, in a major operation in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district, at least 12 Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces. This was the second encounter in two days after two women Naxalites were killed in an encounter on January 20 while a CoBRA officer was injured.

The exchange of fire took place late Monday night and in the early hours of Tuesday in a forested area under the Manipur police station, located along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border, a PTI report said quoting police officials. The operation was jointly carried out by different security units comprising DRG, CRPF, CoBRA from Chhattisgarh, and SOG from Odisha.

It was launched on January 19, after getting intelligence inputs about Maoist movement in the Kularighat reserve forest, barely 5 km from Odisha’s Nuapada district. Two women Naxalites were killed in the earlier operation and police recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition, apart from Improvised Explosive Devices, including a self-loading rifle. Officials said the number of Maoist casualties could be higher.

So far in 2024, Chhattisgarh security forces have neutralized more than 200 Maoists. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said the government is committed to eradicating the Maoist threat in the country by March 2026. While addressing the situation in Raipur, Shah said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership there has been a big reduction in the death of security personnel and civilians due to Maoist violence.

Shah, while underlining the need for cooperation between the state and central forces, informed that 287 Maoists were neutralized in the past one year alone, out of which 1,000 were arrested and 837 surrendered. Eradication of Maoist insurgency from Chhattisgarh remains the topmost priority of both the state and central governments.
