With the UP Police arresting two cyber fraudsters, people have become sensitive about protecting their data. The two, who are from West Bengal have been named as Sandeep Kumar Sen, 23, and Mohd Sahil, 19, were arrested for allegedly using stolen information from banks and social media to con people.
The two operated from Prayagraj and targeted people via a novel contact over a mobile app claiming to be officials of different government departments, such as the CBI and the RBI. Their sophisticated plan was to trap a target into putting Rs 68 lakh into a cryptocurrency investment scam before ‘threatening’ fake legal actions.
Several items were recovered from the police during the arrest: three Nokia mobile phones, ten ATM cards, and fourteen bank accounts. Preliminary inquiries establish that the duo has been forging at least seven persons who have fraudulently collected a total of One Rupee. 5 crores.
The investigation showed that the accused obtained personal data—bank accounts and mobile numbers—through illegitimate means, such as insurance company leakage. They always observed the victim’s movements on the internet before calling them.
Both were living lavish lifestyles, patronizing bars and restaurants in Delhi, purchasing cars, and wearing the trappings of wealth in terms of dress. Their arrest took place at a time when Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a sharp rise in cyber fraud cases; more than 13,000 cases were registered in the last financial year, and people are becoming more cautious about online scams.
