A spate of wolf menace in the Bahraich District of Uttar Pradesh has culminated in eight people being killed while at least 15 others were injured. In response to this, the district forest department was to start “Operation Bhediya” to arrest the offending wolves.
To date, members have arrested four wolves, while others are still loose, and two in this case. On Thursday, one helper trapped one wolf and moved the same to a shelter home.
The Officer in charge, Renu Singh, the Chief Forest Conservator, agreed that UAV and thermal imaging are being employed to find the wolves. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is supervising the operation. Meanwhile, the Forest Minister Arun Saxena went to the affected families and ensured them that they were not averse to public safety.
The district administration has said the families of the deceased will be paid ₹5 lakh, and the amount for the wounded will be cleared next. So, people have been told to stay out in the open and ensure they secure their houses.
The operation is ongoing, and 16 teams to capture the remaining wolves and group patrols at night are in the villages. The Chief Wildlife Warden has allowed the use of tranquilizers to facilitate the capture of the animals.
