Violent clashes in Bengal’s Murshidabad; internet cut and curfew

The clash between the two groups reportedly occurred over an objectionable message written on a neon signboard at a Kartik Puja pandal in Beldanga.

The Murshidabad administration in West Bengal imposed prohibitory orders. On Sunday, it suspended the internet after clashes between two groups allegedly broke out over an objectionable message written on a neon signboard at a Kartik Puja pandal in Beldanga.

According to officials in the know, prohibitory orders were clamped under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which prohibits the gathering of more than five people.

The situation turned grave after the news of the tampering with the signboards spread like wildfire in the area, and mobs on both sides started hurling bricks at each other; vandalism and arson ensued, according to local media reports.

The police sources said the shops and houses were also ransacked, and a police vehicle was damaged during the violence, which later spilled over to the adjacent areas of Kazisaha and Begunbari.

Taking cognizance of the situation, the local cops arrived at the scene and resorted to lathi charges to disperse the crowd and bring the law and order situation under control, the police sources said.
