Wayanad landslide Tragedy: Rising toll and relief efforts

The rescue teams, Indian army NDRF, along with local callous emergency response departments, are working against time in extreme conditions in Kerala’s Wayanad to look for survivors stuck underneath debris of buildings after landslides claimed the hill district of Kerala three days ago.

As many as 308 people died from Wayanad’s massive landslides that occurred on Tuesday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said. Further, the official casualty figure stands at around 5,15,000; however, Keralan ADGP M R Ajith Kumar stated that approximately 300 people are unaccounted for.

The rescue operation, which continued till the fourth day on Friday, expanded, and a drone radar was also used to look for the survivors.

Some of the difficulties include rocking through the tough topography occasioned by damaged roads and bridges and the unavailability of proper heavy logistics to open up the areas where many houses and other structures were brought down by huge fallen trees and mud.

On the other hand, the Indian Army constructs Bailey Bridge, measuring 190 feet in length and in record time as well. It will link the most devastated regions of Mundakkai and Chooralmala across the Iruvanjippuzha River. Those two places are two different towns, and a bridge that connected these two places was destroyed by Tuesday’s terrible landslide.
