West Bengal governor expresses concern over law and order situation.
West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose has expressed concern over the law and order situation in the state in the wake of the Kolkata doctor murder case.
In an interview with NDTV, Bose held CM Mamata Banerjee responsible for the situation. He said medical students had conveyed fears to him of insecurity on campus and in the profession.
The governor said some female students’ families wanted them to quit their studies and return because of the threats. He lamented such incidents in the land of giants like Tagore.
Bose inaugurated ‘Abhaya Home’ at the Raj Bhavan named after the victim, for students feeling unsafe, terming them “valued guests”.
He referred to ongoing “scandals and vandals”, mobocracy replacing democracy and said the spectacle was worrying.
The governor expressed faith in the CBI probe but invoked his constitutional powers to convey concerns to the CM and Centre.
While maintaining restraint on the President’s Rule, he held cabinet collectively but the CM was primarily responsible for the state.
Bose said he had received panic calls from medicos nationwide, stressing measures to boost confidence and enact security laws.
The governor’s comments came amid a political slugfest over investigations and protests in the tragic case.
