Widespread rain expected in NW India due to low-pressure area: IMD

Low-pressure area to bring rains over northwest India next week: IMD.

As per IMD Director General M Mohapatra, a low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal will likely move north-westwards over the next few days, spreading over Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal.

It will then move west-northwestwards into Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and later Rajasthan after 3 days. This is expected to bring widespread rains over northwest India next week.

Currently, the monsoon trough is lying near its normal position over the country. A cyclonic circulation is situated over northwest Rajasthan and another over south interior Karnataka.

Based on these weather systems, the IMD has predicted heavy to hefty rains over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka in the next 2-3 days.

India has witnessed 5% excess rainfall since June 1, with central India receiving 12% and South Peninsula 20% above normal rains. Northwest India has normal rainfall while east and northeast India have experienced 12% deficiency.

The forecasting agency will closely monitor the developing low-pressure area and associated weather systems to update rainfall projections across India.
