Dr. S Jaishankar of India has come to believe that this time will not be easy, as the country’s ‘UNSC bid’ isn’t going to be so successful. While addressing such an event, Jaishankar said that India’s goal of becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council will have to increase efforts and engage more with others to accomplish that.
Admittedly, from the viewpoint of India, it has taken too long to realize this longstanding pledge. With confidence underlying his belief that this aspiration is his government’s priority, Jaishankar encouraged India to rush with the implementation of its electrification program. “We expect to put in more effort when taking the stand that we have only come to present than we would in our discussions with the member states. Agreements will be hard to achieve, consensus building will be the approach to take in this important issue,” he said.
The Minister said geopolitical conditions have evolved over the years in Asia and India, which, with the erstwhile largest economy, is now the 5th largest in the world. “On UN peacekeeping missions and developmental work, too, we have full contributions, as is obvious. But it may be known that some countries will still have some reservations, of which we are conscious too.”
Realizing that a vigorous campaign considering the pitfalls and benefits is a prerequisite for his resolution to be considered an honest admission of the top diplomat. By making such a replacement, Jaishankar sends the message that India is getting ready to intensify its activities even more and urges important states to take their stake in this campaign. Whether India’s ongoing unfaltering efforts amidst the ongoing struggle are successful this time round or not remains to be seen if the permanent member status can be secured.
