Driver shot in robbery attempt continues journey to save passengers
A minibus driver in Maharashtra sustained a gunshot injury yesterday during an attempted highway robbery but remained steadfast at the wheel to transport 17 passengers to safety.
The incident occurred on National Highway 6 when a family travelled from Amravati to Nagpur after a temple visit. Four unidentified men in a Bolero SUV with UP plates began tailing the minibus near Nandgaon Peth.
Driver Khomdev Kawade said the SUV had been following closely for some time. Despite giving it chances to overtake, it didn’t. Then shots were fired, with one hitting the driver’s hand.
Despite his injury, Kawade kept driving the 30 km journey and approached a police station to report the crime. Three other passengers suffered injuries and were admitted to Tivsa Hospital.
A case has been registered against the four suspects. Teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the accused in the daring daytime robbery bid on the national highway.
Kawade’s determination ensured the safety of all passengers when he could have stopped but got them to authorities despite being wounded in the line of duty. An investigation is underway to track down the robbers.
