Bhumi Pednekar’s ‘naagin-core’ look: deeper than fashion trends

Bhumi Pednekar’s risqué look draws mixed reactions.

Actor Bhumi Pednekar‘s recent risqué ensemble for an event sparked varied reactions online. While many termed it “naagin-core”, its deep inspiration has now come to light.

Pednekar wore an ensemble by designer label Raw Mango which drew from Karnataka’s Bhuta Kola ritual dance tradition.

The white drape featured a glass-plated serpentine breast armor replicating the ‘Bhuta breastplate’ worn by male performers. Her accessories complemented the theme of transparency.

Traditionally made of brass or wood, these breastplates are ornately crafted symbols of fertility and Lord Shiva. Their counterpart ‘Theyyam’ plates from Kerala rituals bear semblance.

Deeper insights from cultural experts and the design house acknowledging its ritual origins have provided crucial context to the look.

Where some felt the actor’s non-affiliation made it appropriation, others opined Raw Mango firmly acknowledged the roots.

Comments ranged from calling it “kitschy” to quantifying it as high art. With its explained symbolism and archival references, views on the ensemble appear more nuanced now.

While fashion sits at the cusp of culture, such explained inspirations play a role in informed discussions on its meeting point with social mores.
